Life in the city can become disheartening after a while. The van-life, for everything Instagram tells you, is not always picture perfect – and it’s definitely not made for everyone.
Then, what about life at sea? Not sailing the world on a superyacht (because who wouldn’t want that?) or a smaller, less luxurious vessel, but on what is billed as the world’s first floating city. It’s called Blue Estate and, if you have some $1.5 billion with a capital B to spare, you can buy your very own mega-mansion on it. Better hurry, though, because only two of them are available.

Blue Estate is a new project of marine real estate, announced at the end of last year. It’s situated “only a short trip” from Miami, Florida, and the Bahamian Islands and can be reached by watercraft or aircraft and, soon enough, by regular water shuttles.

The other day, bookings started for a wide variety of property on this floating, man-made island, with the mega-mansions mentioned above being the highest priced. Blue Estate also offers Ring Level studio apartments starting at $19,800. Cheap, if you consider you’re promised access to what will become the world’s greenest community and a legit tax haven.

Blue Estate has a modular base construction, with prefabricated segments of ultra-resistant composite concrete assembled at sea. There is no risk of sinking, the developers say. Thick and very high walls and the island’s own massive size (half of Monaco) will ensure not even the strongest winds will knock it apart. Moreover, there will be extendable storm shutters protecting the upper stories and, apparently, some yet-unspecified means of moving the entire island out of the path of a storm, if need be.

In theory, Blue Estate is humanity’s wildest dreams come true. It’s incredibly luxurious but, at the same time, accessible to those with a more moderate budget. It’s entirely self-sufficient, it’s family-friendly and party-ready at a moment’s notice, it has greenery and stuff like wellness centers and pools, its own health clinic and system of schools for all ages, supermarkets, and even its own gardens and labs for cell grown/cultured meat. Perhaps just as importantly, it will be a crime-free city with minimal regulations, no taxes or VAT, and a business environment welcoming to businesses big and small from all over the world.

And it will be all that in the middle of the Caribbean, where you get 340 days of sun a year.

Mind-blowing, we know. Blue Estate doesn’t go into all the details of how all this will be made possible, but they insist 2025 is the year when construction is completed.

At the heart of the city, which will house some 15,000 people of all nationalities and budgets, is a central port. Living facilities range from studio apartments for one to the two mega-mansions, which will only be built after the developers see the future owner’s plans for them. Each will sit on a lot of 592,015 square feet (55,000 square meters) at 164 feet (50 meters) above sea level and will have everything from a helipad to movie theater and a personal submarine.

There will be ocean clubs, four lagoon-style Olympic-size pools, fresh markets and supermarkets, fine dining, shopping areas, and business buildings. A proprietary cashless payment system will handle all transactions, but each resident will get a free account for payments and savings. Life at sea won’t be much more expensive than life on land, Blue Estate says, estimating the costs at $4,250/month for a family of four or $1,150/month for just one person, not including rent.

As noted above, the floating city will be entirely self-sufficient, as well. Developers promise clean energy will be made from all available resources (solar, wind, wave), with freshwater generated by desalination. Innovative recycling and waste reduction concepts will be implemented, and facilities on site will allow researchers to study the marine environment to develop more, for further implementation elsewhere.

Guided by the motto Freedom, Equality & Prosperity, Blue Estate will have its own set of laws and community guidelines. The fact that residents won’t be paying taxes and VAT is highlighted several times on the official website but, before you get any ideas, the developers say they will absolutely not tolerate money laundering or any other type of illicit or otherwise disruptive behavior. This ranges from owning a gun to selling weed or being overly aggressive towards fellow residents.

The goal with Blue Estate is to deliver “one of world’s safest communities, offering absolute peace of mind and unprecedented levels of privacy,” with unprecedented levels of luxury and 5-star amenities on the first floating city ever built. That’s a lot of impressive claims right there, with each and every one easy to make since this is, as of the time of press, only a concept. Construction is said to start in 2022.
