Williams Salutes Massa's Test

Unlike in the cases of Michael Schumacher and Luca Badoer, Frank Williams saluted the FIA decision to let Felipe Massa test a Formula One machinery prior to his potential F1 return at Abu Dhabi. The 67-year old Englishman welcomed the test via a statement, as he considers it a tribute to F1 safety.

I would like to wish Felipe well with his return to a Formula 1 car next week. It is a tribute to the safety standards of Formula 1 today, and of course to Felipe's characteristic determination and drive, that he is making his return so soon. I hope that the test proves a successful step in his rehabilitation,” said Williams yesterday.

Felipe Massa will reportedly return to the track somewhere this month, but the official date is yet to be settled by Ferrari. The Brazilian driver arrived at the Maranello headquarters earlier this week, approximately 2 months after his accident in the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.

Massa suffered multiple head injuries as a result of the accident – when a piece of Rubens Barrichello's car hit his head at over 100 mph – and was hospitalized for a couple of weeks. His initial medical condition was “life-threatening”, after which he quickly recovered and started a rehabilitation programme.

Following an initial karting race in his native country Brazil, Massa is now prepared to take on the wheel of a Ferrari F2007 machinery, fitted with GP2 tires. However, he will first have to undergo some preparations in the F1 simulator and discuss things over with the Ferrari mechanics before entering the F2007 cockpit.

Earlier this year, Williams objected the tests of Michael Schumacher and Luca Badoer prior to their returns to Formula One racing.
