In recent years, people seem to be crazy about campervans. But have you wondered why? Besides being boosted by the bohemian social media vanlife movement, people's interest in campervans and motorhomes, in general, is fueled by the many benefits a campervanning trip provides, including the low cost of such a vacation, the freedom to discover and explore new places, and the comfort it provides. Not to mention campervans are safer and more suitable for families than the traditional camping tent.
If you've been looking for a high-quality campervan to serve as both your transportation means and accommodation for your weekend getaways, today we introduce you to the 2023 WildAx Altair campervan, a high-end conversion from UK-based WildAx Motorhomes.

If the name is new to you, let me tell you that WildAx Motorhomes is a motorhome and campervan manufacturer that's been in the mobile living business for over 16 years. They were acquired by the French Rapido Group in 2017, and they build impressive, high-end mobile habitats based mostly on Citroen, Mercedes, Fiat, and Ford vans in their West Yorkshire factory. Their team is comprised of people who are themselves camping lovers and experts in their field, and they listen to customer feedback and use it to fine-tune their designs.

The campervans coming out of their factory are renowned for providing high-end specifications, excellent craftsmanship, and luxurious living standards. And all these come for a price. The builder's newest addition for the 2023 season, for instance, is available for purchase for a whopping £93,000, which translates to $118,389 at current exchange rates. That is a lot for a camper for most of us, but then again, the features it comes with make it all worth it.

Many will argue that people are building amazing campervans for a lot less than that, but if you factor in the cost of a van with as many extras as you can afford, the countless hours you spend searching for a suitable conversion kit, the price of boilers, RV fridges, and other appliances, plus the cost of your hard labor and time spent head scratching for solutions to unexpected problems, you may come to the conclusion that it's a reasonable price.

Heading out on the open road is known to do wonders for your well-being, and the 2023 WildAx Altair is the kind of campervan that comes equipped with everything you need so that you can simply throw some belongings in the back of the vehicle and set off on a spontaneous camping trip whenever you feel like it.

It is based on a MAN TGE 3.140 van powered by a 2.0-liter engine delivering 140 hp and measures 6.84 meters long, 2.04 meters wide, and 2.85 meters high. The interior layout comprises a rear lounge that turns into two single beds or a double bed, a front dinette that also turns into a bed, a kitchenette, and a washroom. It can provide overnight accommodation for three people and has four seats for travel.

The standout feature of the new Altair campervan is its unique, all-electric habitation area. This is basically a "gas-free vehicle," as all its onboard appliances are powered by a sophisticated all-electric power system comprising a 3kW inverter and roof-mounted solar panels capable of processing up to 300 Watts with the help of two 100Ah Lithium leisure batteries. An upgraded battery-to-battery charger is also part of the package, meaning owners will benefit from 12V and 230V power at all times.

A Truma Combi heater/hot water system will take care of temperature control and your hot water needs using either fuel from the van's diesel tank or electricity. The Altair is also fully winterized and comes with insulated water tanks. All these features ensure the campervan's capability to go off the grid.

The front dinette is made up of a forward-facing bench seat, two swiveling cab seats, and a side-fixing table. Toward the center of the van, you will find the kitchenette, which is perfectly functional despite its small size. Cooking is possible thanks to a two-hob induction cooktop and a microwave. A decent-size sink and a 154-liter all-electric fridge/freezer are also included, while your kitchen essentials will fit perfectly inside the cabinets, six drawers, and a slide-out vegetable/bottle rack. A flip-up extension to the kitchen worktop ensures you have enough counter space for meal prepping.

The rear of the Altair camper is occupied by a large U-shape lounge that can convert into two single or one double bed. Four opening windows and a skylight fill the space with natural light. All the windows have concertina blinds and flyscreens.

Upper-level cabinets on all three sides offer plenty of space for storage. Under the lounge benches, there is a large full-width storage area that can be accessed via the rear doors, so you will have enough storage space to carry personal items for extended trips.

Finally, the wet bathroom in this campervan includes a custom-made all-fiberglass shower tray, a sink, and a tray, plus additional storage units.

Despite the hefty starting price, the quality base vehicle, the well-executed habitat, and the promise that all the facilities will operate off the grid make the WildAx Altair an appealing choice for campervanning enthusiasts.
