Wi-Fi Internet on Chevrolet SUVs, Trucks and Vans

Chevrolet has just announced that several of its SUVs, trucks and vans will begin offering Wi-Fi internet access through a partnership between the parent manufacturer and Autonet Mobile. Basically, all these cars will act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and will offer full internet access inside the vehicle and up to a 150 feet perimeter around the vehicle with any Wi-Fi capable device, including laptops or handhelds.

These are the models that will begin offering Wi-Fi internet access: Equinox, Traverse, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche and Express.

“Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile enhances commuting, family vacations and work,”
says Chris Rauser, Chevrolet Accessories Manager. “It benefits active families on the go, as well as professionals who need immediate information at remote job sites. Its uses are almost endless.”

The Wi-Fi connection does not require any standalone software and has a speed of up to 1.5 mbps. It can support several devices at the same time and additional docking stations are also available, which allows customers to move the router from one vehicle to another.

"When it comes to worksite use, the Wi-Fi connection offers immediate access to everything the Web offers to make the job quicker and easier, from access to online ordering sites, municipal sites with permit and building code information and more. And when used with a laptop computer, the information comes in a larger, easier to navigate format than the small displays of cell phones," Chevrolet said in a statement.

The option is already available in Chevrolet's participating dealers, with pricing starting at $199 ($399 retail price, less $200 mail-in rebate with two-year service agreement).
