As you might very well already know, BMW decided to offer a Competition Package for the brand’s most powerful M cars starting with this month, marking the release of the LCI 5 Series.
The Competition Package was specifically conceived to enhance handling properties, in adherence to the principle applied to the development of all BMW M automobiles: fine-tuning the suspension technology to the performance curve of the engine to bring maximum performance in line with consistently superlative responses that are precision-controllable even in highly dynamic driving situations.
The main improvements include a power increase of 15 HP and extensive add-ons to the chassis setup. Along with the suspension and damping systems, the stabilizer bars have also been more tautly tuned. In the BMW M5 this adjustment has resulted in a lowering of the car by around 10 mm.
The Active M Differential on the final drive - standard on all models - is also issued with its own control unit in conjunction with the Competition Package. In combination with the modified set-up for the suspension, damping and stabilizer bars, this results in further improved traction.
As BMW went to Portugal to release the M Performance Parts for the 4 Series, they also took the Competition Package enhanced M5 around the Estoril track and, fortunately for us, they recorded the high-performance sedan while going at it. The result is shown below. Enjoy!
