Strapping twin-turbos to Italian exotics and bragging about one or two thousand horses is all cool, but how do you prove your performance? Racing is a pretty good method of achieving that goal, with the latest example of that coming from US tuner Underground Racing.
A few of the aftermarket specialist’s cars attended the US 1/2 mile event that took place last month in Texas and these put on quite a show. The event, which brought together thousands and thousands of hp on the Ellington Airfield near Houston, saw an Underground Racing Lamborghini Gallardo set a new top speed record.
We are talking about a Gallardo with an 1,800 AWHP rating, which managed to record a top speed of 224.4 mph (361.3 km/h), while pulling a quarter mile trap speed of 177.3 mph (285.45 km/h). That is the kind of performance that puts this V10-powered Lamborghini into the upper league of the hypercar territory.
The vehicle, a 2011 Gallardo Superleggera LP570-4, performed the run on street tires. Yes, the aforementioned designation shows the car delivered 570 hp at the crank when it left the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. In the typical fashion of Underground Racing cars, the exterior has been left in stock condition, so, yes, we can call this a sleeper.
The amusing thing was that the following two positions were also taken by Undeground Racing Lamborghinis, so the podium must’ve been a pretty boring sight.
