VW USA Reports Best Ever May Sales for Passat and Jetta

Some people say Volkswagen sells the same shape of sausage in different sizes, but we'd argue there's nothing wrong with sausages in the first place. Volkswagen of America today reported 38,013 units delivered in May, a 1.7 percent decrease over prior year sales. While that might not seem all that important, demand for the Jetta, Passat and TDI Clean Diesels was the biggest it's ever been for the month.

Of the total 38,013 cars they delivered in May, 10,267 units were Chattanooga-built Passats. The Jetta performed even better, with 15,910 units, up 4.8 percent over last year. The new Beetle and the Tiguan small crossover were also strong performers, with 3,718 units, up 23.9 percent year-over-year, and 2,635 units, a 6.5 percent increase, respectively.

“We saw an uptick in our consumer traffic and closing rates this month which allowed us to set new records for Jetta and Passat,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO Volkswagen Group of America.  “In a month in which the industry saw strong growth in the pick up truck segments, an area in which we do not compete, we are pleased to see healthy consumer demand for our passenger cars, especially the growing demand for our TDI Clean Diesels and Hybrid line up.”
