Volkswagen is set to celebrate the world premiere of the latest revision of the Golf GTI Clubsport, its most powerful front-wheel drive Golf ever, at the Nürburgring Nordschleife 24 Hours endurance race on June 1.
According to the automaker, the iconic ADAC 24-hour race is Germany's largest motorsport event, and the countdown is on – not just for the expected attendance of more than 200k spectators or the racers and their teams but also for Volkswagen. This is because the carmaker will feature (on May 31) at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack the official inauguration of the most powerful front-wheel drive Golf ever: the latest Golf GTI Clubsport.

For now, the most successful European car of all time, the Golf, is still clad in funky camouflage attire - the icon's 50th birthday will be celebrated at the legendary track, not in advance and online. Set to arrive in front of the big crowd on the 'Ring Boulevard,' the reworked Golf GTI Clubsport has a completely restyled front, with redesigned standard LED Plus headlights, a first-ever front illuminated VW logo, plus a big roof spoiler at the rear to make sure there's additional downforce.

Other modifications include the reworked LED taillights, fresh 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels that evoke the classic Detroit wheel of the fifth-gen Golf GTI or the new 19-inch Warmenau forged wheels, plus a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel along with a new Infotainment system featuring the latest voice assistant IDA with Chat GPT integration. There's also an exclusive Special driving profile that is specifically tuned for "the special track characteristics of the Nürburgring Nordschleife."

That's all fine and dandy – the Golf GTI Clubsport will probably make a fine addition to the roster. However, there's a big problem! More precisely, Volkswagen is going to overshadow this series-production launch with two Golf GTIs that are way cooler than your typical Clubsport. Luckily, one of them is, in fact, derived from the regular model – the Max Kruse Racing team will use a Golf GTI Clubsport 24-hour race car in the 24-hour endurance race to prove the potential of E20 alternative fuels.

Its 2.0-liter turbo mill with 348 ps (343 hp) is powered by a new bioethanol fuel from Shell, which contains 20% bioethanol plus 40% "renewable components from residual and waste materials." Last but not least, these modern Golfs also share the spotlight with a stunning trio of first-generation, classic Golf GTIs that will compete in the ADAC 24h Classic race – and one of them, a 1980 Golf GTI from Group 2, has the same camouflage design as the GTI Clubsport. However, there's one big difference if you're curious about our two cents on the matter: with its ultra-compact stance and bonkers widebody kit, it looks crazy enough to make the modern Golf GTI Clubsport star feel decidedly bland and uninteresting.
