VW Passat Lingyu, New Golf Unveiled in Shanghai

Volkswagen proved once again that China remains a core market for its global strategy and launched  the new Passat Lingyu along with the new Golf and BlueMotion Technologies at the Auto Shanghai 2009.

Passat Lingyu comes with all kind of improvements over its predecessor, including aesthetic, engine power and fuel economy, the 1.8T model now generating 120 kW (160 hp) - up from 110 kW (147.5 hp) on the previous model - and fuel consumption of 6.2 l/100 km (37.9 mpg) for the automatic transmission - down 15 percent from the initial figures. Furthermore, the manual transmission version achieves a fuel efficiency rating of 37.3 mpg, a decrease by 11 percent, according to
official figures provided by the German manufacturer.

The revised Passat Lingyu has an increased wheelbase by 9.1 centimeters compared to the previous model, which brings more legroom to rear passengers. Nevertheless, the car feels just like the predecessor, Volkswagen said, with the extra-size maintaining the same level of maneuverability and handling.

The new Golf will be offered to Chinese buyers with a 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged direct injection engine mated to a 7-speed DSG double-clutch automatic transmission.

Furthermore, the German manufacturer demonstrated its BlueMotion Technologies, a package that reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while maintaining the same level of power. Volkswagen says these technologies are currently gradually applied in the Chinese models sold by the company, with two models already displayed at the show - Golf BlueMotion and Lavida BlueMotion.

"Volkswagen sales figure in the first quarter of this year has clearly exceeded our expectation at the beginning of the year. We have complemented our product portfolio with our new locally produced stars Passat New Lingyu and New Golf. Additionally, we have displayed the most advanced and environment-friendly technologies," Dr. Winfried Vahland, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group China, said.
