VW on Track to Become No. 1

Without any doubt, the plan announced by German group Volkswagen at the height of the economic crisis, in 2009, is working like a charm. Set on becoming the largest auto maker in the world by 2018, overtaking Toyota, Volkswagen's goals are supported by more than extraordinary numbers achieved in the harshest of times for the automotive industry.

The group already posted its financial figures for 2010, with the EUR126.9 billion sales revenue achieved last year being an all time record. The first months of 2011 as well fall right into place, making the auto maker confident that the 2018 goal is within grasp.

The main way through which the group plans to overtake Toyota in such a short time became obvious in the past two years: expand, extensively, the lineup of models offered by each of its brands.

The corporate efforts will mean great news for the people looking for a job, as Volkswagen plans to hire an additional 50,000 people by 2018. The new employees will also help the brands working under the VW logo expand their business into markets they are currently not present in.

"Our brands already offer mobility solutions to meet every need and in every vehicle class, all around the globe. This diversity is our strength. In addition, we will systematically extend our technological leadership," said Martin Winterkorn, the group's CEO.

"The Volkswagen Group will also grow at a qualitative level in the coming years. We combine volume growth, the highest possible product quality, and customer and employee satisfaction with sound finances and steady increases in profitability. This means we are now more convinced than ever before that we can reach our strategic goals."
