VW Beetle Open Air Party in Travemunde

In an attempt to try and show that the Volkswagen New Beetle is just as popular as the car for the masses which made history even since prior to the beginning of the second World War, Volkswagen announced today the 2010 edition of the New Beetle Sunshine Tour.

According to the carmaker, a record 400 New Beetles and New Beetle convertibles from 14 countries are expected to cram together in Travemunde for the event. The tour will start on Saturday, at Lubeck’s Volkswagen Centre on Berliner Strasse and then will take to the road, with a single stop scheduled in Warnsdorf/Timmendorf.

On site, the tour will be adorned with the concerts of On A SunDaY, The Fog Joggers and Jenix, all bands who belong to the Volkswagen Sound Foundation.

"Some of them are coming from as much as 1,800 kilometres away. We’ve never had so many registrations before from southern and eastern Europe in particular," Gabriele Kraft, the organizer of the event said in a statement.

This is perhaps the last time we get to see such a large gathering of New Beetles before the new generation is previewed. As we told you yesterday, Volkswagen is working on a new generation of the Beetle, which is expected to be showcased at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit next year.

The new Beetle, which will be radically different than the current and all past generations, is hoped to bring big quality improvements as well. Engine wise, the model will offer 5 petrol engines, two diesels and very likely a hybrid based on the powertrain featured on the Jetta CC.
