Celebrating 87 years since the manufacturer set up shop and the launch of the new XC90 mid-size luxury SUV, Volvo will build 1,927 units of the First Edition. The name doesn't tell you much, but this first batch of XC90s are chuck-full with everything you'd expect from this type of car. In the U.S., the limited run model will set you back just under $70k, while British customers will have to spend £68,000 for it.
The Swedish manufacturer's second-generation XC90 is a game changer in every single aspect compared to its predecessor and many segment rivals. Don't be put off by the 2-liter four-cylinder engine lineup. There are two potent turbo diesel mills available, along with two petrol motors with sufficient ponies and torque on tap. If you want the full English breakfast, then the range-topper is your Volvo XC90 - baptized T8 Twin Engine, this drivetrain option employs the turbocharged and supercharged T6 petrol with 322 hp as well as an electric motor rated 82 horsepower. Apart from the 400+ horsepower, it's the 640 Nm of torque that makes this variant the XC90 to go for if you want that get-up-and-go.

With the online order books for the U.K. market opening on September 3rd at 15:00 GMT sharp, the 2015 Volvo XC90 First Edition will surely sell like hot cakes. The scarcity, the toys you get as standard and those little special touches are to blame for that, so you'd better be on time if you want to have a chance at ordering one of those 1,927 very special vehicles. “Those who want to be among the first ones to own the best SUV in the world have to act fast. The huge interest in the all-new XC90 indicates that the First Edition will sell out quickly,” explains Alain Visser, who is the senior vice president of Marketing, Sales and Customer Service for the Volvo Car Group.

So what do you get for £7,000 over the most basic Mercedes-Benz GL or £5,000 more than the sticker price of an entry-level S-Class? Well, you get a very versatile seven-seater SUV that's garnished with uniquely numbered tread plates, a distinctive badge on the tailgate and the most powerful Drive-E diesel engine Volvo makes - the D5 twin-turbo with 225 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque. A trick electronically controlled air suspension is also included, featuring a choice of five operating modes, including one where the driver is free to tailor the settings to his or her personal taste. Think of it as the equalizer of a vehicle's stereo or something like that. But the previously mentioned are just appetizers.

That wickedly elegant Onyx Black exterior paint is teamed with a gorgeous set of eight-spoke, 21-inch Inscription alloy wheels. Step inside and Nappa leather seats in Amber are there to keep you snug and comfortable, while the Charcoal leather dashboard and Linear Walnut inlays will make you go "Yeah, life is good." The power-operated front seats are ventilated, while the outer seats in the second row have heating and the two third row seats are power-operated. The tablet-like touchscreen in the centre is one of the most striking features in the all-new Volvo XC90. It is the heart of the all-new in-car control system that is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to operate their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services similar to GM's OnStar 4G LTE.

Aside from the serialized plaques and leather-wrapped key fob reading First Editon, there's a thumping great Bowers & Wilkins audio system offered as standard, featuring a 1,400-watt class D amplifier and 19 speakers, including one of the first air-ventilated subwoofers integrated in a car and the latest sound processing software. Is that enough to play your favorite tunes or what?
