Just like we expected, the 2015 Volvo XC90 will benefit from T-shaped LED daytime running lights, similar to the clusters that debuted on the Volvo XC Coupe Concept. Would you care to guess how the Swedish manufacturer named the new headlights?Thor's Hammer, and we're seriously not joking.
Before jumping to conclusion and labeling the Volvo marketing people as Marvel Comics enthusiasts, we deem necessary to point out that the running lights were christened after the shape of the hammer used by the famous Norse god of thunder. Thomas Ingenlath, senior VP of design at Volvo, explains that “anyone who looks in their rear-view mirror is going to know immediately that there is a new XC90 behind them. The XC90 is a car that has presence on the road.” We couldn't agree more about that.

Try to think of a current headlight design as striking and outlandish as this one. Yup, it's got that wow factor most other premium cars lack in this day and age. Another very cool aesthetic feature adorning the front fascia of the second-generation Volvo XC90 is the rectangular grille with rounded corners. See those hollowed vertical bars bearing a satin aluminum finish? Don't they contrast nicely with the polished aluminum grille surround?

Overall, the 2015 Volvo XC90 is pushing the design envelope in this SUV segment. Even more impressive is that such a great looking car can seat seven people, with the third-row of seats designed for adults up to 1.7 meters tall. “SPA and the XC90 are firm evidence of our Volvo-by-Volvo strategy. The XC90’s outstanding combination of luxury, space, versatility, efficiency and safety will bring the SUV segment into a new dimension, just as the original XC90 did in 2002,” said Dr. Peter Mertens, senior VP of Volvo's R&D division.

The teaser image we've been provided with also tells us something about the side mirror and bonnet design. Besides the incorporated turn signal lights, the underside of the mirrors seem to incorporate a small camera, which means that Volvo will be offering a surround view camera system, similar to what German manufacturers offer on upscale sedans and SUVs. As for the hood, two creases on each side give it a muscular look, which is befitting for a great all-rounder such as the 2015 Volvo XC90.

Volvo says that the all-new SPA platform has cost the company almost $11 billion over the past four years and will be used by every future model from the S60 sedan upward. To be offered with a limited lineup of ultra economical yet powerful four-pot mills running on petrol or diesel, the most interesting XC90 variant is the T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid. It uses a 2-liter turbo and supercharged Drive-E gasoline engine that sends power to the front axle, while the rear is handled by an 80 hp electric motor.

Combined output? "Around 400 horsepower and 640 Nm of torque" according to the Scandinavian carmaker. To boot, this top-of-the-range variant promises a pure electric range of 25 miles in urban conditions. Expect to find out everything the 2015 Volvo XC90 has to boast with in two weeks' time, when the model will make its public debut at an exclusive event in Sweden.
