There is no denying that Europe is in a bad way right now, and most automakers agree this is likely to hurt sales next year. Ford has already announced 4,000 temporary layoffs for next year, but Volvo is taking a longer term view of the markets.
According to Volvo’s CEO Stefan Jacoby, the automaker wants to sell no less than 800,000 cars a year by 2018, and as a result the manufacturer will hire 10,000 extra hands by 2020.
“By then, we will have to increase our headcount to 33,000 – 35,000 employees,” Jacoby said in a interview with Automotive News Europe.
But don’t open any bottles of champaign yet if you’re looking for work in the European industry. The automaker currently has 24,000 people under its wing, of which 16,000 reside in Sweden. But the new jobs are part of Volvo’s more global ambition, and most jobs will be created in China, where they only have 1,000 workers right now.
But the Asian market is expected to generate a quarter of all sales, and will likely become a manufacturing hug in the future.
