Volvo will launch the next-generation XC90 with a plug-in hybrid version and new safety technologies, the Swedish automaker announced at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show last week.
According to Lex Kerssmakers, Volvo Car Corporation senior vice president, the plug-in hybrid SUV will have a 300+ HP turbocharged four-cylinder engine as a base and will deliver at least 600 Nm of torque. He declined detail on the new safety features, but said the XC90 won’t get pedestrian airbags.
“From the moment we launch XC90, we will also launch the petrol plug-in version. We have the four-cylinder turbo strategy. We have a 300-plus horsepower engine as a basic engine and then you get the electrification so you end up with 600-plus Nm car. It is the right combination between power and fuel efficiency, and that's what we are trying to achieve,” he told Go Auto.
The next-generation SUV will ride on the company’s new Scalable Platform Architecture and will be launched with turbocharged four-cylinder engine only.
