The VW group’s new small car will also be offered as an Audi, Seat and Skoda, with the vehicles entering the market by 2015.
The Lupo, which will become the new entry level vehicle in the German carmaker’s range, seems to have lost the rear engine, rear wheel drive layout of the concept due to financial reasons. VW has chosen to switch to a front engine, front wheel drive setup that would allow it to use existing powerplant-gearbox combinations with minimum efforts.
The Volkswagen Lupo will be offered on European markets with its debut scheduled for the summer of next year. The vehicle will initially be available with a naturally aspirated 1 liter engine producing 65 hp and a 1.2 liter common-rail diesel unit with an output of 75 hp. The latter will use Bluemotion technologies to offer impressive CO2 emissions (these are expected to fall bellow 80 grams per km) and fuel economy figures.
The spring of 2012 will see the five door Lupo come to the market, with the vehicle also bringing a new 85 hp turbocharged direct injection 1.0 liter engine. The Lupo is also expected to receive an electric version, which could be based on the E-Up concept.
An earlier report shows that, although the Lupo (still named Up at the time) will not be offered in the U.S., VW plans to introduce the electric version of the car to certain markets in America, starting from 2013.
