Electric scooters are regularly considered as the last mile gizmo (low autonomy, for use around home). Rarely do big companies take them serious as if they were actual means of transportation, but it would appear car companies are starting to grow fond of them.
At least that seems to be the case according to Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn, who recently said the Germans are working on a three-wheeled scooter that could as well rival the somewhat famous Segway. Since there are not a lot of details released so far, the big difference to the American-built e-scooter mall cops are usually seen with is the price.

Winterkorn told Bild that The Last Mile Surfer is an electric scooter with three wheels that weighs somewhere around 11 kg (24 lbs). With a range of about 20 km (12 mi), it should provide enough mobility to cancel the effort of walking from the parking lot to the office. Or at least that’s what its purpose allegedly is.

The foldable scooter should be ready sometime next year with a retail price estimated at 1,000 Euros ($1,094 at the current exchange rate). We’re far from having enough information to have an impression, but we can tell this much: if that will be the final price they’d better come up with further features.

The one-mile-commuter industry is filled with all the options you could think of, from low cost to solar-powered and everything in between.

Moreover, as far as we can remember, VW's announcement is not even that much of a surprise considering BMW and MINI also have something similar.
