Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce their new EA288 diesel engine on certain US market models in the second half of 2014.
Already available on the European market, the new 2.0-liter TDI delivers 150 HP and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque and returns better fuel economy thanks to a number of modifications. The mill will be fitted in the 2015 Passat, Golf, Jetta and Beetle models, but the company says it will eventually replace all the 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engines found in Audi and Volkswagen models.
"The Volkswagen Group is a leader in clean diesel technology," said Oliver Schmidt, VW America general manager of the energy and environmental office. "With the introduction of the new EA288 engine, we are excited that our family of TDI Clean Diesel vehicles is continuing to improve and will be even more clean, fuel efficient and powerful."
About a month ago Volkswagen also revelead that the familiar 2.5-liter five-cylinder powerplant will be replaced by a turbocharged 1.8-liter unit for the 2014 model year.
