Volkswagen has announced that the familiar 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine will no longer be available in the United States for the 2014 model year, when it will be replaced with a turbocharged 1.8-liter unit.
The 170 HP powerplant, that will gradually find its way on the company’s Jetta, Beetle and Passat models, will provide an estimated highway fuel economy improvement of up to 17 percent. For starters, the 1.8-liter engine will become available with the 2014 Jetta and the 2014 Passat SEL. The remaining Passat lineup and the Beetle range will go on sale with the new unit later in 2014.
The German company also revealed it will introduce its VW Car-Net connected services this fall as part of the 2014 model lineup. VW Car-Net offers features such as crash notification, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle location assistance and will be available on Beetle, Beetle Convertible, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat, and Tiguan models.
