Rumors about a VW four-door coupe of more compact proportions have almost become reality. The German company just released sketches and a pinch of info about a concept it calls the Midsize Coupe, coming to the Beijing Auto Show on the 20th of April. And as we all know, this company doesn't make too many concepts for the sake of it…
Don't let the Midsize part of the concept's name fool you, this isn't a Passat. The four-door coupe is just 4,597 mm long and thus shorter than a Passat and shorter even than the Jetta. However, it's wider at the hips, just like a Scirocco.

The styling is clean and contemporary. A longer slope from the A pillar to the boot is obvious, but the A3 sedan has that as well. Its true sporty nature is revealed by the wide wheel arches which even cut into the rear door footwell. But even though it's bursting at the seams, the front and rear are totally restrained in keeping with the brand's nature.

The press release states 20-inch wheels with 245/40 tires have been fitted, which probably means the whole package is not as radical as the renderings would lead us to believe. The passenger cabin sketch pretty much indicates the same thing, a melange of parts from the Golf and other new models.

Like the American Jetta GLI, power for the Midsize Coupe Concept comes from a Golf GTI engine, the 2.0-liter TSI making exactly the same 220 PS (162 kW) which propels the car to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds, again, just like the GTI.

There's no question this 4.6-meter four-door coupe will be cool as a concept and is 99% guaranteed a chance at going into production. The MQB platform is there and so are the engines, the gearboxes and the production facilities. But let's just hope VW can transition into a nice car with roughly the same looks that won't break the bank.
