While we originally reported that Volkswagen would be stopping production of the Routan minivan altogether (it is currently on hold), it seems the previous reports were wrong. VW has now confirmed that they will be restarting production of the Routan in the summer of 2013.
For those unfamiliar with the matter, VW does not build the Routan themselves, and the minivan is in fact a reworked and rebadged version of Chrysler Town and Country, with which it shares all of its running gear. What is surprising for us is VW’s choice to not use their own engines, and the Routan has the same 3.6-liter V6 under its bonnet, as the Chrysler-badged variant - the engine is far less efficient than VW’s own units, and this vehicle would also work great with diesel power.
Volkswagen has yet to announce what will happen to the Routan once their contract with Crysler expires, in the 2014 model-year, yet in their quest to achieve a sales figure of 800,000 units per year by 2018, they will need all the production capacity they can get.
