The Volkswagen Phaeton has failed to reach its sales targets, being one of the most understated cars in its segment and thus there have been many rumors that VW will discontinue the car. However, the German carmaker played those rumors down, telling us to prepare for a new generation of the vehicle later in this decade.
Now, the Phaeton’s business case has received a new strong point, as the vehicle has registered a 50 percent sales increase in China last year, with the Dresden factory producing a total of 11,166 units. The best-selling models were long-wheelbase ones, powered by V6 and V8 petrol engines. Unfortunately, this still places the Phaeton behind its main competitors.

The next generation of the car is expected to arrive in 2015 and will be underpinned by the company’s MLP (modular longitudinal platform) architecture, sharing this with the Audi A8.
