Volkswagen surprised everybody earlier this year by launching an undated Jetta instead of an all-new model built on the MQB platform. And just like the Polo facelift, the cosmetic changes are hardly noticeable, even to Vdub fanatics who have been looking at the same grille design for many years. That's because most of the updating efforts focused on the safety systems and drivetrains.
Following its debut at the New York Auto Show in April, the new Jetta is now available in Britain, bringing a slightly refreshed front bumper, new rear suspension and undated interior. Upon hearing the news, we immediately set out to the official UK configurator website where we discovered the engine range has been much simplified. You can either get it with a 1.4 TSI petrol or a 2.0 TDI diesel, both coming in two distinct power outputs.
On the base Jetta S, which starts at £18,815, the 1.4 TSI makes 125 PS and is fitted with a 6-speed manual, being capable of a reasonable 52.3 mpg. The cheapest 2.0 TDI starts at £20,095. However, it only offers 110 PS because it's also the most efficient in the range with 70.6 mpg boasted. Higher spec SE and GT models come with updated trim and gain access to 150 PS versions of the same engines, together with DSG automatic gearboxes.
Even the base Jetta comes as standard with DAB digital radio, ESC electronic stability control, electric windows and air conditioning. The mode up to the SE models and you will receive 16-inch ‘Atlanta’ alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel, MDI multi-device interface and cruise control.
Finally, there's the range-topping Jetta GT, which can push £24,715. Like the American Jetta GLI, it gets lower suspension, 17-inch alloys, a few cosmetic touches, front sports seats, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers .
Sadly, the Jetta continues to be built in Mexico and will never be as popular with UK buyers as the Golf and Polo hatchbacks, especially at the sorts of prices we mentioned. But if you're after a German sedan that does 70 mpg and comes with a large boot, the Jetta could be your ideal motor.
