Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion Details

After releasing version after version of the new generation Golf, German manufacturer Volkswagen has announced the introduction of yet even more flavors of the 1.6l engine, including a BlueMotion variant. The engines will be available for all three Golf- based models: Golf, Golf GTI and Golf GTD.

There will be three versions of the 1.6l unit. The first is an entry-level 90 PS, available only for the S trim, which provides 62.8 mpg (3.74l/100 km) combined cycle and emits 118g/km of CO2. The second version of the engine, available for the S and SE trim, develops 105 PS and provides the same fuel consumption, while CO2 emissions stand at 119g/km.

The third unit is the 105 PS with BlueMotion. This little detail allows it to provide 68.9 mpg (3.41l/100 km) and translates into 107 g/km of CO2. To provide this eco-friendly figures, the unit makes use of several blue, or green technologies, including longer ratios in the five speed gearbox (for the third, fourth and fifth), as well as regenerative braking.

A start-stop system is also available for the BlueMotion version. Additionally, as with all BlueMotion variants, some minor tweaks have been made to the aerodynamics of the car. The new Golf features optimized aerodynamics with front-mounted cooling ducts moved to the underside of the vehicle, a ride height lowered by 15 mm and low rolling resistance tires.

The Golf BlueMotion is based on the SE trim and as such is fitted with seven airbags, ABS, Electronic Stabilization Program, Climatic air conditioning rain sensors, automatic lights, an iPod compatible CD stereo with eight speakers and cruise control. The new versions will be available in the UK starting September.

Towards the end of the year, Volkswagen will introduce a new generation of the Golf BlueMotion, based on the entry-level S trim and expected to provide over 75 mpg (3.13l/100 km) and under 99g/km of CO2.
