The Japanese automaker is rocking its annual Kenshiki forum in Brussels, Belgium, like a champ with novelties across the board - from pure EV concepts to electrified pickup trucks.
Firmly committed to a sustainable future, Toyota is creating new advanced mobility solutions specifically for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, while the Hydrogen Factory Europe is expected to "further grow Toyota hydrogen business and stimulate a wider roll-out of the hydrogen eco-system." The battery-powered vehicles are gaining momentum, too, as the company previewed an expanded dedicated BEV that will comprise six vehicles – two of them will turn into production models based on the Urban SUV and Sport Crossover concepts and the company also brought the FT-3e prototype from Japan Mobility Show.

No one was left out of Toyota's show of European force, and the commercial vehicle growth ambitions are now higher than ever. The Proace and Proace City minivans, along with their Verso people carrier versions, are both revamped, and the Japanese carmaker also introduced the new Proace Max to complete the panel van lineup. Even better, there's also a fresh Hilux to speak of.

Unlike the 2024 Tacoma, which is arriving at nationwide dealerships in the United States this month as an all-new iteration (N400), Toyota has yet to rework the eighth generation into a new model. Although it was presented in 2015, almost a decade ago, the current model soldiers on across international markets. In Europe, though, customers will have the option to rival the electrified Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid thanks to the newest member of the Toyota Professional family – Hilux Hybrid 48V.

The company says it is "more efficient, with improved performance and smoother driving in urban and off-road environments (and makes) no compromises on exceptional towing and payload capacity or unparalleled off-road capability." However, unlike the rivaling, best-selling Ford Ranger, this is just a (mild) hybrid 48V system, as opposed to the plug-in hybrid capabilities of its main competitor.

In essence, the 2.8-liter diesel is mated to a "compact motor generator using a belt system, which in turn charges the new 48V lithium battery, which is small enough to be installed under the rear seats (…) and weighs just 7.6 kg." The 48V battery also works with the vehicle's 12V system through a new DC/DC converter. The 2.8L turbo diesel has 201 hp and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) but now gets an additional 16 hp and 65 Nm (48 lb-ft) to "enhance acceleration, power and efficiency."

The new 2024 Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V will arrive at dealerships on the Old Continent around the middle of 2024, promising up to 5% better fuel efficiency and with the latest safety and infotainment equipment – the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology suite plus the newest Toyota Smart Connect system on an 8-inch display.
