Toyota is opening a new testing and training facility so that mechanics will get more specialized and avoid possible defects like the ones that caused the massive recall five years ago.
The 9 billion yen ($90 million) Takimi Service Center in Gifu Prefecture, near Toyota City, was opened with a big ceremony joined by Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda and government officials.
The facility offers advanced training for mechanics and its test course can simulate 13 driving conditions. Due to its location, the region gets both hot temperatures in the summer and freezing temperatures in the winter. The “safety academy” will train about 2,600 Toyota mechanics per year at first, looking to reach 4,800 at some point.
While the new testing ground can’t stop recalls definitively, as no one can make a fail-proof vehicle ever, it will help the automaker act quicker and find problems sooner than before, further enhancing the customer’s satisfaction.
