Toyota’s EV P002 has just broken the official fastest time for an EV around the Nurburgring, a record set by its predecessor, the P001. The new car managed to best the old record by an impressive 25 seconds, crossing the line just 7:22.329 after setting off.
The record-breaking run was driven by German driver, Jochel Krumbach, who was able to drive the 469 hp EV quickly and in a consistent manner. Aside from the power figure, the P002 has a colossal torque figure, of 900 Nm (663 lb-ft), which makes any sort of acceleration, at any speed, a breeze. The motor draws juice from a 42 kWh battery pack, which has been purpose-built for racing.

The P002 is the latest development to come out of Toyota Motorsport’s Cologne-based venture, and at the rate at which things are moving along these days, the Japanese manufacturer is clearly looking to secure a top spot in the fledgeling sport of EV racing, which is set to grow... exponentially.
