Toyota has unveiled a brand new prototype race car, the TS030 that will compete in the LMP1 Le Mans class. This was created by Toyota Motorsport GmbH and comes with a carbon fiber chassis.
But the most interesting fact about this car is that it features a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter V8 engine that’s part of the THS-R hybrid racing system that uses capacitors to store energy. We’re hoping this will help advance hybrid tech, like it did with diesel.
Much is expected of the car’s racing debut, to take place on May 5th at the Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. By the June 24 Hours Le Mans endurance race, there will two such cars on the grid. Right now, TMG has three drivers lined up for the hybrid racer’s seat - Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima.
Hybrid car regulations state the racer can only recovering a maximum of 500kJ "between braking zones whilst restricting deployment to only two wheels." It will be interesting to see what the TS030 can do with this.
