When you think of Dubai, probably the first things that come into your head are the desert and gas-guzzling supercars screaming on dusty roads in the sunset. Why not some hybrids buzzing effortlessly from place to place?
Even though UAE has the smallest gas prices, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is thinking about green transportation and as a result Dubai Taxi’s fleet will gain some hybrid Toyotas.
In collaboration with Al Futtaim Motors, RTA has introduced 20 Toyota Camry Hybrids to the taxi fleet, that will consume about 33 percent less fuel than the actual vehicles and will also reduce carbon emissions by 33%.
“RTA is making unremitting efforts to bring about a shift in the infrastructure systems of mass transit so that they are environmentally friendly and meet the increasing demand for transportation in the emirate. The launch of hybrid vehicles is one of the several steps RTA is taking to support Dubai Government’s efforts for a greener and cleaner emirate,” said Acting CEO of Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) Ahmad Mohammad Al Hammadi.
For now, RTA will study the effects of introducing the hybrid vehicles and if all goes well, they hope to add more in the future.
