When it comes to spacious homes on wheels that are genuinely comfortable for large families, it just doesn't get better than the Toroa XL. As its name suggests, this Kiwi design is an oversized tiny house with two levels and three large bedrooms while maintaining all the attributes of a mobile home. Better yet, the possibilities are endless in terms of configuration.
This tiny home was born to become iconic, a timeless design that will continue to inspire generations to come. It's one of the finest examples of what ingenious design and top-level craftsmanship can achieve while remaining within the framework of a fully transportable small dwelling. It's the biggest and most impressive creation of the New Zealand-based company called Ruru Tiny Homes and an oversized version of its popular Toroa platform.

Toroa XL is not just a double-story home on wheels. It boasts incredible height. Both levels ensure full standing height; the walkway has a standing height of 1900 mm (6.2 feet); the bathroom and the kitchen both feature 2100 mm-high (6.8 feet) ceilings. In addition to the impressive height, this large home is 12 meters long (39.3 feet) and three meters wide (9.8 feet). The main bedroom is placed downstairs, while the other two, connected via a comfortable walkway, are in the loft area.

This ingenious design isn't just about massive space. It's also much more versatile than other homes in the same size category. Customers have almost endless possibilities when it comes to mixing and matching layouts, interior styles, and different settings. Envisioning their dream home becomes a fun game where they get to decide where each piece of the puzzle goes. The highest flexibility is linked to the central part of the home – the kitchen, dining area, and stairs can be configured in multiple ways, each with a spectacular, stylish look.

One of these configurations, for instance, includes a large L-shaped kitchen with an elegant, classic dining setup in the middle. The staircase is also a classic choice with integrated storage in the form of open shelves so that it doubles as a beautiful bookcase for the living area. Another possible layout embodies a fresher, more contemporary vision. A kitchen island doubling as an informal breakfast bar takes the place of the classic dining setup, while the staircase is a minimalistic, modern version with sleek black handrails.

Another possible layout that's just as interesting creates a separate, dedicated dining nook with a very romantic vibe. In this scenario, the dining area sits between the kitchen and the lounge, separated by wooden walls for privacy. In each case, the extra-wide sliding glass doors play an important role. They open up the entire area and can stay open during the sunny summer days to create a supremely spacious indoor/outdoor area for dining and entertaining guests.

The bathroom isn't placed near the main-floor bedroom but at the opposite end of the house. This is a true spa-like bathroom with a huge walk-through space and high-quality appliances, including a full-size shower, an extra-wide vanity, and a toilet of the customer's choice. The kitchen also comes with a built-in electric oven, a four-burner gas stove, a full-size dishwasher, and ample room for a large fridge.

The Toroa XL was designed with three bedrooms, but versatility is key here as well. Each of these rooms can be turned into something else, from a spacious home office to a lovely playroom, depending on each owner's lifestyle.

Both loft bedrooms are remarkably spacious, but one in particular is truly impressive, with a generous design that fits in a lounge setup with a cozy sofa in addition to the bed. This is what makes the Toroa XL so versatile – owners are free to switch up each room's function because they're all big enough, fitted with large windows, and well-lit.

While the sheer size and extreme versatility take center stage, this Kiwi home is also about durability and sustainability. Each Ruru home is built using locally sourced materials as much as possible and by working with local contractors and suppliers. The exterior frames are made of treated timber and produced specifically for each unit.

AlpineClad is used for cladding due to its thermal qualities in addition to its outstanding durability, while three different types of insulation are used for the walls, underfloor, and ceilings. All the windows and doors are manufactured locally, they're double-glazed and framed with aluminum, not plastic. Inside, customers can choose between white-grooved ply or birchwood ply with black detailing for the lining.

Future owners have a wide variety of choices to customize their dream home. The Toroa XL boasts enough space and volume for all of it, no matter how bold it might seem for a tiny house. There's no doubt that it's one of the best family tiny homes ever designed. Pricing starts at NZD 239,000 ($150,000) – not too much for 60 square meters (646,000 square feet) of floor space and a high-quality build that can easily pass the test of time.
