Many passionate automotive fans would argue that BMW's design department is tripping as of late – just think of the oversized vertical kidney grilles on some models, the uninteresting recent 5 Series, or the bonkers XM flagship crossover SUV.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg as far as controversial designs are concerned. However, not everything is precisely prone to suspicions, and maybe a few years from now, we will look at the M3 and M4 with different eyes and renowned appreciation. I don't think that will happen with the X7 LCI, the current 7 Series and i7, or the XM Label Red, on the other hand.

Anyway, it's pretty clear that BMW is heavily experimenting on the styling front – just look at the recent M2 and X2 crossover SUV, for example. But not everything has to be taken to the extremes – the convoluted ones or the overly simplified ones like the upcoming Neue Klasse options. At least, that's the opinion of the imaginative realm of digital car content creators.

For example, the good folks over at car.design.trends have recently focused our attention on a hypothetical proposal for the next BMW 3 Series done by Erfan Davodian. This Zurich, Switzerland-based mechanical engineer is also a car designer (probably in his spare time), and between 'doddles,' independent compact sports car proposals, and other stuff, he also found time to envision a potential look for a BMW saloon-looking remarkably close to the proportions of the 3 Series sedan.

Interestingly, he does employ many of the cues that make BMW a controversial choice nowadays – this saloon has a massive kidney grille, lots and lots of edges and creases, plus a set of LED headlights that have nothing to do with the beloved ring shape. Unfortunately, while we do see a little bit behind the scenes to understand the creation process from hand sketching to marker rendering, digital rendering, and ultimately to 3D modeling, there is also just one POV to discuss.

Of course, don't just take this with a pinch of salt – this is entirely wishful thinking and an independent design project that may never have anything to do with the company's actual roster. Speaking of BMW's upcoming models, we are also pretty sure that the next 3 Series won't reach us before the Bavarians complete at least the 5 Series family with the upcoming M5 and M5 station wagon that are expected to sport a feisty twin-turbo V8 PHEV assembly under the hood.

After that, we might expect to see the 3 Series take charge because Audi is diligently preparing to unleash its latest models and will also rethink its model nomenclature with even numbers representing EVs and the odd ones catering to the ICE-powered side of the equation.
