This Is a Japanese Ricer… Literally

“Ricer” – according to the urban dictionary, that term describes “A person who makes unnecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster.”
We all know that guy who has modified his dad’s old Honda Civic with crazy spoilers and 4-inch exhaust tips that serves no purpose other than to make the car louder. Yes, it’s that guy who uses duct tape to fix everything and buys the biggest wing on the whole internet, even though it actually makes his 100 horsepower box on wheels slower.

Over in Japan, things are a little different. There, a ricer can mean something like this thing, a machine designed to plant saplings of rice. Only in Japan can there be a tiny motorized machine designed specifically for this job and on top of that it’s a Mitsubishi. It honestly looks like a fun thing to ride… for about 5 minutes.

Also only in Japan, it looks like just about every job is done wearing a hard hat. What could possibly happen in the middle of a rice field that’s so dangerous? Do they wear hard hats at the factory that makes hard hats? Does everybody in this country own at least one? We’d like to know.

Because we’ve used up all the humor for this story, we might as well tell you some facts. The rice planter is made by a division of the Japanese company called Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery. The one in the video is an older model, but we believe it’s called the LV6 and is powered by a 4-stroke single cylinder engine with 14 hp. And get this: they’re all wheel drive.

They see me ricing, they hatin’!
