For a long time, a battle royale game by the name Fortnite has dominated the gaming industry. Launched in 2017, the Epic Games idea has grown into a global phenomenon, with a total of 220 million accounts created, and millions of online players at any given time.
There is an underlying story to the game, but the overall purpose is to be the last man or woman standing at the end of epic battles between 100 individual players. There are a lot of weapons to had and used, potions and skins, and even vehicles.

As far as vehicles are concerned, most of them are secondary, meaning they don't take a role as active as say in Battlefield. But they are there, and over the years carmakers (a very limited number of them) have allowed Epic games to use some of their models to enhance the gaming experience.

As far as I know, however, none of them have created their own islands in Fortnite until now. That changed this week, when German carmaker announced the launch of Hypnopolis.

Unlike most other user-created maps in Fortnite, this one is not playable in the sense that large-scale fighting between strangers can take place on it. But it can be played with friends and explored, revealing no more and no less than a virtual BMW world.

The map has been created as a modern-day city, with skyscrapers, floating bridges, and a lot of green spaces. It's not a simple Fortnite map, but it includes some of BMW's most important landmarks, including its Four Cylinder headquarters, the BMW Welt, and the BMW museum, all three of them located in Munich in the real world.

We're promised the place is filled with hidden branding and Easter Eggs, but most importantly, for the first time in the history of the game, it allows gamers to customize a car in Fortnite. And not just any car, but one that hasn't been even revealed yet.

Placed under the double cone of the virtual BMW Welt there is the Car Creator, where a CGI version of the BMW iX2 awaits to be personalized by players. The Car Creator is not available from the get-go, but will ask players to complete a series of challenges before gaining access to it.

From October 4 to October 11 the car will only show up there in prototype form, and with only a limited number of paint schemes, wheels, and other fittings. From October 11, when the reveal of the iX2 is planned, BMW will make available the entire range of customization choices that will also be on the table in the real world.

The German carmaker is currently conducting a major push into the virtual world, as a means to open up new dialogue opportunities with Next Gen target groups. What that means is that we should expect some more similar announcements to be made over the coming years.

Back to Hypnopolis, the easiest way to reach the BMW Fortnite island is to type in the following code: 3541-0917-2429.
