If you want your camper to serve as an adventure van, you need to make sure it can take you off-road and off-grid. Today, I'm discussing a rig that's designed for those who crave both comfort and adventure and want to enjoy group trips or family outings.
What we have here is the SJ4 camper vans, the latest creation made by San Juan Vans. As its name suggests, this company is based in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. San Juan Vans' mission is to develop off-grid-capable adventure vehicles that can take you wherever you want to go, 365 days a year.

The SJ4 is built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 170" wheelbase chassis, a popular option among van converters. In fact, all of the company's builds are based on Sprinter vans. Moreover, the SJ4 is meant to comfortably accommodate a family of four, as it boasts two bedrooms and one bath. But before we take a closer look inside, let me tell you more about the exterior features.

This rig is equipped with a Van Compass Stage 3 suspension kit and rides on BFGoodrich K02 tires, further improving its off-road capabilities. Moreover, it's got 360-degree LED lighting, and Stoked Adventure Outfitters Nerf Bars. Other notable exterior details are the massive pop-top roof and flares with slide-screen windows, which increase the interior bedroom space.

Pop the sliding door open, and you'll discover a cleanly designed interior – San Juan Vans opted for custom-built bamboo cabinetry paired with marine-grade vinyl flooring.

You'll notice an open layout, as the driver's cabin isn't separated from the rest of the living space. What's more, the driver's and passenger's seats can be swiveled, and there's a vast headliner shelf above.

You'll find a massive seating area in the front – besides the two front seats, there are two additional swiveling captain's chairs mounted to the floor, both with integrated seatbelts.

Between these two seating arrangements, you can add two swivel tables, making this area perfect for playing board games, working on your laptop, or enjoying a meal.

To climb up inside the pop-top roof, you'll have to deploy a telescopic ladder. It's a RRE Global SCA 252 pop-top roof, built from a durable reinforced glass fiber and lined with plush upholstery. What's more, it's got three screened windows and it offers insulation and soundproofing.

The next part of this camper van is the kitchen, which is split into two parts. It features two countertops, a relatively small yet deep sink, an overhead microwave, a two-burner induction stove, an Isotherm fridge/freezer, two overhead cabinets, and various other drawers and cabinets.

Integrated by the door into one of the overhead cabinets is a custom-made control panel with light switches, a Victron Cerbo GX touchscreen display that controls the electrical system, and buttons that dump the rig's greywater tanks.

You'll find the bathroom on the driver's side of the interior. It offers a bunch of space and comes with a Nautilus self-cleaning sliding door, a cassette toilet connected to a removable black tank on the exterior, and a shower. Moreover, the space left between the bathroom and the bedroom was used to create a compact closet.

The rear part of the interior is occupied by the bedroom. It has an elevated queen-size mattress, two overhead cabinets, two reading lights, a Maxxair fan, and a control panel for the heating and A/C system.

San Juan Vans, like other van builders, chose to mount the bedroom higher up to leave room for the garage. And they left a ton of space, enough to fit bulkier items and even bicycles.

The sides of the garage house the rig's utility systems. On the right side, you'll notice the power system. As I mentioned earlier, this company is all about enabling proper off-grid travel. This van's 48 V electrical system lives up to that promise, as it comprises an 8.4 kWh Lithionics 51 V lithium-ion battery, a 3,000 W Victron inverter/charger, and a dedicated second alternator capable of 6.9 kW of charge.

This latter piece of equipment allows the system to fully recharge after just 1.5 hours of driving. What's more, you even get 300 W solar panels on the roof. You're definitely not going to be worried about running out of battery juice in this rig.

On the opposite side, San Juan Vans installed an AquaHot Hydronic heat and on-demand hot water system, a Cruise'n'Comort 12,000 BTU A/C - the company explained that you can run this A/C at full blast for 9 hours, and a 30-gallon (114-liter) freshwater tank.

Regarding the rest of the plumbing system, you get a dedicated, indoor-mounted greywater tank for the sink and one for the shower, which is mounted under the vehicle.

All in all, this four-season-ready tiny home on wheels is ready for any off-grid adventure. Furthermore, it's cozy and aesthetically pleasing and can accommodate more people than many other camper vans. This rig is currently for sale – you'll have to dish out a whopping $198,500 (€184,178) if you want to get your hands on it.
