Before investing in a touring caravan, many people prefer to test the waters and go car camping in their SUV or truck or use the good-old tent to see if they really like camping. Whilst these are brilliant ways to explore the great outdoors, there are so many benefits associated with upgrading to a touring caravan.
Those new to caravanning won't be looking for top-of-the-range touring caravans, though. They will prefer an entry-level travel trailer that allows them to experience the fun and relaxation that come with camping at a low cost. Luckily, the entry-level market segment has oodles of great options to choose from, making it easier than ever to purchase a recreational vehicle.

The 2024 Elddis Xplore 422 is a great example of a budget-friendly RV that's well-appointed and boasts state-of-the-art technology and competitive specifications to offer a high degree of comfort.

Elddis, a recreational touring vehicle manufacturer based in Consett, County Durham, England, is now a part of the Erwin Hymer Group. The company has a rich history spanning six decades, so they certainly know what makes a good caravan. They offer a wide variety of trailer sizes and layouts to suit everyone.

The company's Xplore lineup includes four models, ranging from a 2-berth unit to a family-friendly 6-berth caravan. All of the models are exceptionally easy to tow, and each floorplan is compact yet feels spacious and offers everything you need for affordable adventures. Since its introduction in 2018, the Xplore range has kept its price and weight down to make caravanning accessible to everyone.

The 2024 Xplore 422 measures 5.88 meters (19.3 feet) in length, 2.18 meters (7.15 feet) in width, and 2.65 meters (8.7 feet) in height, and has a traditional two-berth formula, offering a lounge with two face-to-face benches that are long enough to make up a double bed, an L-shaped kitchen across the back, plus a washroom with separate shower.

Just like all the models in the Xplore range, the 422 is built tough using fully-bonded SoLiD Construction that offers industry-leading body integrity and rigidity backed by a 10-year warranty. The caravan's sides are made of GRP composite and have a shiny finish, while the construction has dry waterproof joints and 95% fewer exterior screws, which helps create an impenetrable water barrier.

With a Gross Vehicle Mass of just 1,200 kg (2,645 pounds), this two-berth caravan is super lightweight, which improves fuel consumption and makes it easy to two behind a wide variety of vehicles, including some mid-size SUVs.

The interior is deceivingly spacious, with an open-plan layout that makes it an excellent choice for couples and small families. It offers contemporary styling with soft furniture and a neutral color scheme, and all the facilities to cook all your favorite meals, enjoy a good night's sleep, and maintain cleanliness with no compromise. That's because the Xplore has a nicely equipped kitchen, good bathroom facilities, and a comfortable place to sleep that come standard.

The roomy front lounge includes two 6.5-foot-long (1.9m) benches, so there is plenty of space to have guests in. When night comes, these setees can be used as two separate single beds, as they are perfect for sprawling out just as they are, or can be converted into a decent-sized transverse double bed.

A pull-out tabletop is incorporated into the chest of drawers between the two benches, but there is also a free-standing table stowed away in the wardrobe if you need a bigger one for evening gatherings.

Overhead lockers occupy the entire upper part of the lounging area, providing plenty of storage space. Actually, the designers have been very generous with storage, considering the confines. Besides these overhead lockers, there are also two floor lockers, drawers under the lounge benches, and a large slim cupboard, not to mention all the cabinets in the kitchen.

The kitchen extends across the back of the trailer and has an L-shape design, with spacious cupboards and modern appliances ranging from a three-burner gas hob to an oven and grill combo and a 98-liter Dometic fridge. A black gloss enameled sink is also included and comes with a glass lid that creates additional workspace for meal prep.

The bathroom is a nice surprise in itself. It is quite spacious for a caravan this size, and it even includes a separate shower cubicle with a one-piece door. There is also the usual swivel-bowl toilet and a narrow cabinet with a countertop that has a circular protrusion to perfectly accommodate the small round sink.

Given the compactness of this caravan model, having an open-plan layout was imperative so as to give the illusion of a bigger space and make it easy to walk from the lounge to the kitchen and bathroom.

A large front window, a back window, and a pair of side windows that come complete with roller blinds and flyscreens ensure the interior is well-lit and airy, while a single-door front locker accessible from the outside offers some extra storage space.

This two-berth travel trailer is a perfect choice for first-time caravanners as it offers all the basics without compromising on comfort and functionality. Pricing for the 2024 Eldiss Xplore 422 starts at £20,599 (or US $25,053).
