Usually, whenever there's something new coming from Audi, I tend to lament the Ingolstadt-based automaker's inability to present something striking from a design perspective. That's because, secretly, I really hope they can find a way to flesh out their styling, just like they did with the technological aspects of their vehicles.
Well, as it turns out, now I'm begging for a more subdued approach for the upcoming Audi S3 hatchback and sedan facelift. Luckily, the Ingolstadt-based automaker, which still hasn't wrapped the testing phase for the S3 refresh, claims no less than ten improvements are coming – and those flashy orange wraps aren't included. Instead, they are part of the camouflage setup, which is one area where Audi tends to go overboard in compensation for its subtle model designs.

Anyway, the updated Audi S3 was sent – complete with that shiny camouflage – to face the "challenging curves (and) steep mountain passes" of the roads around Salalah in Oman. From there, the German company is now shining the spotlight on – what else – its "numerous technical innovations." This comprehensive teaser focuses on the latest measures they have undertaken to "heighten the driving dynamics" of the new S3 siblings.

The most important one is also the most obvious. The upcoming Audi S3 hatchback and sedan will pack 333 ps and 420 Nm, which is 328 hp and 310 lb-ft, up 23 ps and 20 Nm (23 hp and 15 lb-ft) compared to the outgoing model year. As such, the new S3 matches the most expensive Volkswagen Golf ever, the Golf R 333 special edition. Only this one is the 'regular' S3, and it will sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in just 4.7 seconds on its way toward the limited top speed of 155 mph (250 kph).

The 2.0-liter TFSI also boasts optimized engine tuning with a more spontaneous power delivery thanks to the "preloaded turbocharger." At the same time, the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission offers halved gear shifts under full load. Just like the Audi RS 3, the new S3 now packs fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels thanks to the addition of a torque splitter.

The Audi drive select mode has a new dynamic plus mode that alters the settings for the torque splitter, transmission, and engine while the throttle response is more direct – all to "an increased and even more emotional driving experience." Also, the S3 will be more agile thanks to the modified front axle with double the camber at the front (just under 1.5 degrees), and the sporty model also has standard progressive steering along with upgraded, more powerful brakes.

Last but not least, there's also a next-generation electronic stabilization control system onboard, along with two new tire options – performance or sporty tires from Falken for the 19-inch wheels with 235/35 dimensions.
