Have you ever lost a wheel while driving along? Of course you haven’t, because you are careful to always have the wheelnuts fastened up properly - it’s common sense, after all (too bad it’s not that common any more).
Take a look at this five second video. This guy is driving along, when all of a sudden, a wheel breaks loose from a semi-truck coming the other way and hits his car smack dab in the middle. He may have been able to avoid hitting it, but the fact of the matter is, that this is extremely dangerous, considering the fact that truck tires, along with their rims, are very heavy and carry a lot of inertia with them, so when they break loose, they could easily kill somebody or at least do massive damage.
Luckily for the driver’s bodily integrity, the tire hit the front of his car so most of the impact was absorbed through the bodywork. However, it the tire would have hit the car from the side, or on an angle, it could have changed the car’s trajectory and the driver wouldn’t have had time to react and would have crashed.
