Since BMW is going to release its first all-electric city-car this year and a lot of other companies already have hybrids on the European market, the Netherlands decided to encourage the usage of such cars and develop a fast-charging infrastructure all over the country.
Therefore they organized a public auction and the country's leading power and automation technology group, ABB won it, setting out to create the largest nationwide network of EV charging stations.
According to the press, the project is destined to bring a fast-charging station within 50 kilometers (30 miles) of all 16.7 million inhabitants. The system will be using a multi-standard design for the fast chargers, thus making sure almost all EVs can be charged using them, including the i3.
The end result should be more than 200 Fastned stations along Dutch highways, equipped with such devices, capable of recharging a car in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle.
