For Tesla, that would be the automatic wipers.
There seems to be a wide range of issues related to Tesla wipers, from their momentary refusal to work to unexpected freezing and late response to rain when you need them the most. Although in themselves not enough to make people change their minds about buying an EV, they sure make people go nuts.
One guy facing this issue took to Twitter and tried to convince Tesla to fix the damn things already.
“Need to adjust sensitivity of wipers. Very late response to the rain when left in AUTO mode. Software upgrades keep messing up wipers and Lo/Hi beam light’s sensitivity. Please take a look into it. Not that it is very very important..Just FIO to look into it. Thx,” the man, username Yogi, said.
In his usual way of giving totally random replies to people, Elon Musk promised the wipers would not only be fixed, but utterly transformed.
“Deep Rain neural net coming soon. We’re not trademarking any other Autopilot neural nets, just this one, because rain is deep,” his answer goes.
Unlike most cars that use rain sensors to activate the wipers, Teslas use the Autopilot cameras to tell the car when it’s raining. And although no new neural net will be created specifically for the wipers, deep learning is key to Autopilot and it seems to have been used in coming up with a solution as well.
“It is actually called deep rain, as sort of a joke at Tesla. Takes a surprising amount of deep learning to know when and how fast to move the wipers.”
The upgraded system should not only detect rain, but also determine what its impact is on road conditions, so that the car could adjust its speed accordingly.
As per Electrek, the updated wiper system will be deployed as an over the air update, but the release date was not announced.
