We’ve already gotten used to seeing people using the Tesla Model S as a benchmark for racing supercars and yet we can’t help but pay close attention to the video below, which shows a Model S P85D battling it out with a McLaren 650S Spider.
The 691 HP EV uses its Insane mode, while the British supercar makes full use of its 641 via the Launch Control function. As it happens with many racing videos involving McLarens, the Spider version is present - regardless of the model, the open-top incarnation has similar performance to the coupe.

While the Tesla has an all-wheel-drive launch advantage, the weight difference between the two place a massive ace up the McLaren’s sleeve. To make sure the conclusion of the battle is relevant, the two repeat the race, as you’ll be able to see in the clip.

We’re all waiting for the Ludicrous mode

Tesla has made sure its customers won’t become bored, announcing a Ludicrous mode that will bring the 0 to 60 mph time of 3.3 seconds to a whopping 2.8 seconds. This is the result of the overall output jumping to 762 hp. We are talking about a hardware upgrade that includes the battery fuse and contactor. In order for the range to stay in check, the battery pack itself goes from 85 to 90 kWh.

While the update is also retrofittable, being offered for a price of $5,000, production is set to begin next month and we promise to bring you all the resulting racing videos as soon as we get our hands on them.
