The Tesla Model S all-electric sedan remains the safest car built in the United States as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reaffirmed the five-star overall safety rating for the 2014 model, the Palo Alto-based manufacturer announced earlier this week.
The EV was awarded five-star rating in all subcategories for the 2014 model year, receiving the highest safety rating in America for the second time. Tesla took advantage of the moment to state, once again, that the Model S is “over five times less likely to experience a fire than the average gasoline car.”

As a reminder, the Tesla Model S is being investigated by the NHTSA over potential fire risks “associated with undercarriage strikes”, after three fires have occurred earlier this year in Mexico and the United States.

In related news, Tesla Motors announced a software update for the Model S that helps the vehicle’s charging system cope with unexpected power fluctuations caused by faulty wiring or other conditions.
