If you ever traveled to Mumbai, India, you may have noticed the dull colors most of the taxis share on the inside. It turns out there are others who feel the same way. There’s this group, however, that has a plan to change that using vivid colors and personalized designs. Their project is rather simple, take as many cars as you can out of the 50,000+ cabs running on the city’s street and work on their interior design.
They have already completed a couple of cars and are planning to finish at least 20 until the end of the year. The Taxi Fabric is one of those win-win situations. Both the city’s designers are provided with a unique platform to show off their work, and the transportation business gets the proper push so that customers enjoy their trips better.

The designs that cover the taxi seats are often functional and forgettable and with the outstanding design talent Mumbai has to offer, this shouldn’t be the case. Design, as a job or even simply something studied at school, is unfortunately not widely recognized in India. Older generations don't understand it - design to them just performs a function. Many people don't know that design can create a real impact,” the need for Taxi Fabric is explained.

For these reasons, the idea of connecting designers with taxi drivers has appeared. Not only do they enhance the taxi experience, but they often offer the artists the chance to envision their personal ideas into the final look.

There’s a website where all the designs will be exhibited along with the stories behind them and insights from each of the designers. Artists in Mumbai are already creating Taxi Fabrics that tell stories from their city, showing Indians the impact good design can have. But if you want to back their project, you can check out their ongoing Kickstarter campaign that ends Tuesday, August 11.
