A few years ago, Volkswagen and Suzuki signed a deal under which the Germans would supply engine technology and Suzuki would offer better access to the Asian market, especially India. As you’ll all know by now, the deal went bad and the two automakers exchanged volleys of strong remarks.
Suzuki said VW didn’t give access to more advanced technologies, while VW said Suzuki broke their agreement by going to Fiat for diesel engines.
Suzuki has now found a new partner in the form of the aforementioned Fiat, who will supply their 1.3-liter Multijet four-cylinder turbo diesel with 75-horses to Maruti Suzuki, for use in the Indian market.
The engine will be produced locally by Fiat India Automobiles Limited (FIAL), a joint venture between Fiat and Tata Motors, at a plant near Pune in Maharashtra State. Production volumes will sit at 100,000 per year, and supply will start this month.
