SuperUte Takes the BMW M3 Pickup Joke Seriously

BMW showed it had a sense of humor when it released a set of images showing the M3 Pickup as an April Fools joke. While the car looks a bit odd and doesn’t make a lot of sense on the European market, we rightfully guessed that Ute fans will love it.

It seems that South African tuning company LupiniPower was delighted to learn of BMW M toying with the idea of a BMW M3 Pickup. The idea of a Bavarian utility vehicle has received a lot of attention, despite the dubious premiere caused by the info being leaked, so the tuners wanted to highlight that their take on this sort of car is very much a reality.

“As huge BMW M fans, we’d love to see an M3 Pickup as our SuperUte’s only real market rival,” Michele Lupini explained. “It is hugely gratifying to note that M has taken note of a need for such top-end pick-up vehicles, although we do also need to point out that SuperUte is certainly no joke – our development cycle is now close to being completed and we’ll soon be ready to deliver.”

The 535 bhp 6-liter engine under the Chevrolet SuperUte’s bonnet is capable of pushing the car to 60 mph (98 km/h) in 4.8 seconds, while 100 mph (162 km/h) flashes by in just 9.9 seconds. The quarter-mile time is 12.7 seconds, while top speed is an impressive 175 mph (282 km/h). This is 11 mph (18 km/h) short of the M3 Pickup’s top speed, but its still impressive for a vehicle that can carry all the bags of cement you want.

LupiniPower didn't just tune up the engine for greater power, it also installed bigger race-spec front disc brakes and calipers and fine-adjusted the suspension for improved handling, road holding and dynamic ability, without crippling the ride and comfort.
