One month ago, British luxury marque Bentley unwrapped the EXP 100 GT, a concept car meant to show the world how Bentley cars of the year 2035 will look like. But that year is a long way from now, and Bentley needed a way to let its customers experience the car of tomorrow today: enter the new Bentley augmented reality app.
Called Bentley 100 AR, the app gives users the opportunity to experience the car as 3:4 and desktop scale models simulation, both on the outside and the inside. There are even narrations from two members of the car’s design team, JP Gregory and Brett Boydell, describing how the concept came to be and what it is supposed to represent.
We tried the Bentley 100 AR app and found it to be frustrating, to say the least.
First, it is only available for Apple devices, so Android fans are, at least for now, let out of the loop. We downloaded the app on an iPhone XR, only to find we need a printer as well.
That’s right, a printer. The app downloads a marker of sorts that needs to printed on an A4 sheet and then scanned.
Also, the car will not appear anywhere you want, like the Mission E does (in the office, in the parking lot and on the street) when using Porsche’s dedicated AR app. The EXP 100 GT will only show up on the said piece of paper, floating above the said marker.
But since most of us will probably never get to see the car in real life –the concept will be on display throughout the year only at select Bentley dealers – we’ll have to make do with what this app has to show us.
Back to the car itself, the EXP 100 GT is a fully autonomous vehicle powered by an electric powertrain with four motors and a range of 700 km (434 miles). Acceleration time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 300 kph (186 mph) round up the technical aspects of the model.
