After recovering for the toughest time of its existence in 2009, South Korean manufacturer Ssangyong displays an unstoppable appetite for hard work and, who knows, perhaps some amazing results.
Present at the Geneva Auto Show with the SUT 1 concept, the car maker promises it will become a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. Earlier this week, Ssangyong announced plans to expand its business in the US and a new sales target for 2011, set at 120,000 units globally (and double that in the year to come).
Of course, Ssangyong cannot hope to achieve these numbers with only the present lineup of models. Several models are planned for the years ahead, including apparently an electric version of the Korando SUV.
According to WhatCar?, the model will be powered by a 160 horsepower electric motor which draws its power from a 35Kw lithium-ion battery pack. The range of the model is expected to sit at around 110 miles (177 km), with the top speed being rated at 93 mph ((150 km/h).
A smaller version of the electric Korando, so far known as the EREV, will also be produced, but this time in the form of a plug-in hybrid. It will use an internal combustion engine paired to an electric motor good for 107 horsepower. Together, the two propulsion means will give the model a range of about 250 miles (400 km).
There is, so far, no word on when the two models become available, nor on what the initial launch markets will be. Yet, judging by the haste with which Ssangyong is pushing ahead, it wouldn't be surprising if we saw at least one of the two models by the end of the current year.
