Peugeot is finally stating to do things right for a change. While some might say their new styling direction has gone beyond over-the-top straight into over-done, they are French so it’s to be expected. Floating grilles are definitely better than grinning grilles, and this is a good starting point.
To replace the ultra-boring 308 hatchback, their C-segment contender, Peugeot is going past the 308 number and is going back to square one with the 301. This is because 309 was one of the worst cars of the early 90s.
The car you see here is a test mule for this new car, but still using most of the 308’s body. It will be built on the platform as the Citroen C4 and DS4, meaning that, compared to the 308, it will be slightly shorter but also wider.
Expect three-cylinder engines to sit at the bottom of a very complex range that will include diesel hybrids. The 301 should replace the 308 next year, and might eventually have a sedan version besides the usual three- and five-door hatches.
