The current Peugeot 308, launched in June 2007, was a real step up from the 307 it replaced - a car which was a real disappointment after the 306, an excellent car in its day. Now, though, just one week prior to the official unveiling of the all-new VW Golf Mk7, Peugeot have carefully planned for us to see this, the all new 308.
With styling cues from the very pretty 208, as well as the SR1 concept, it should look better than the current car, which has very bulbous (and very French) lines which may or may not appeal to some. The next 308 is a smoother-looking machine, with a more flowing design.
However, we expect Peugeot to put the 308 on a diet, in the same manner that they have done with the 208, which is considerably lighter than the 207 it replaced. Factor in the very wide range of petrol and diesel engines available at Peugeot’s disposal, and this C4 platform-based car will undoubtedly be an even more serious contender at the top of the hatchback class, with excellent handling characteristics as well as frugality.
Expect to see it fully uncovered some time early next year, as 2013 is the year when the current generation car will be phased out (though, the sedan may remain in production in China).
