Peugeot released the first images and details of the 308’s sporty version, the GTi. Available as a five-door model only (a curious fact for a sport-oriented car), the 308 GTi sports technical and styling updated that distinguish it from the normal versions.

Starting with this car, Peugeot will use the GTi badge all over Europe, not only in the UK.

The 308 GTi is powered by the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, that develops 200 horsepower available from 5,500 to 6,800 rpm, and a constant 202.8 lb ft of torque (275 Nm) between 1,700 and 4,500 rpm. Found also on the Peugeot RCZ and on the Citroen DS3, this engine offers the 308 GTi low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The car’s average fuel rating is 34.1 mpg (6.9 liters/100 km), while the CO2 emission of 159 g/km.

Combining a number of innovative technologies like THP (Twin-Scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection), and VTi (variable valve lift and valve timing), this engine is the fruit of the BMW-PSA collaboration. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the unit pushes the 308 GTi from 0 to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds and to a top speed of 147.2 mph (237 km/h). Not record-breaking figures, but fast enough for most drivers. Stepping hard on the gas pedal will also offer drivers a racing sound, as Peugeot fitted on this model the Sound System technology, which makes the engine noise particularly distinctive.

The 308 GTi has a special styling package, featuring the front bumper from the 308 CC fitted with a carbon fiber lower lip, and a rear bumper sporting a black air diffuser. Further changes involve the addition of a rear spoiler over the rear hatch and a chromed double exhaust. On the inside, the 308 GTi has aluminium pedals and shifter, and a sport steering wheel with a slightly flat bottom. Special white-background dials are also used.

All these won't come cheap though. The car will be launched on the French market on June 10, for a base price of EUR26,900 ($34,160).
