The Super Sport badge is a big thing for Chevrolet, and like Audi didn’t want to slap the RS on its crossovers just yet, so too must the Americans have jitters about an SS compact hatch. Well, actually, there have been a couple of cars unworthy of the name in the past, but at least they won’t want to do this with the Sonic.
John Buttermore, lead development engineer for the 2012 Chevy Sonic, told Wards Auto that they do have a sportier version coming, but it won’t be an SS.
“It would take a lot more air going through that engine for an SS, and there is no SS in the works. For 2013, we do have some sportier versions coming, just not an SS,” Buttermore said when he was asked if a tuned version of the current 1.4-liter turbo would be the right engine for the job.
We’re guessing this is a performance package he is talking about, and not a completely new model, but we can’t know for sure yet.
